Poll workers in Ward 1 say voting is brisk today at the Old National Guard Armory and Memorial Stadium.

Voters have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to cast their ballots for either Tommy Atchison or John Jowers for the vacated Ward 1 seat on the Selma City Council.

By mid-afternoon more than 230 people had cast their ballots at the Old National Guard Armory, running slightly ahead of the number of voters at Memorial Stadium, which also had exceeded 200, according to poll workers.

The special election is necessary because Ward 1 Councilman Cecil Williamson ascended to the president of the council after the death of elected council President Geraldine Allen.
