Registered voters in Selma’s Ward 1 will go to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots for one of two candidates to fill the unexpired term of Cecil Williamson.

The polls open at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m., said Selma City Clerk Ivy Harrison.

Voters will cast their ballots either at the Old National Guard Armory or at Memorial Stadium, both on Dallas Avenue to decide between one of two candidates, Tommy Atchison or John Jowers.

Jowers is a longtime resident of Selma and Ward 1. He is no stranger to local politics, having run unsuccessful for mayor about two years ago. Jowers is retired.

Atchison is a longtime Selma resident and attorney with Gamble, Gamble and Calame LLC in Selma.

The election is the result of Williamson’s ascent to the position of president of the Selma City Council, which occurred after the death of Geraldine Allen, who was elected to the position in an at-large city election nearly two years ago.

The council had voted Williamson as president pro-tem of the council, meaning he would fulfill the unexpired term of Allen if she could not complete her four-year term for any reason.

Harrison said she did not know what kind of turnout to expect for the election. The ward has about 2,500 registered voters.

Votes will be counted at City Hall in the council chambers after the polls close.

The Selma Times-Journal will blog live from City Hall the election results, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
