I had the opportunity Friday to attend a meeting of sports editors from Boone Newspapers, the Selma Times-Journal’s parent comany, to discussways to implement social media and Web broadcasting into our coverage of sporting events.

The idea is simple: People don’t want to wait for information, they want it instantly.

While posting a message on Facebook or Twitter is a good, quick way to get information out, it’s also difficult because of everything else going on during a game — writing notes, taking pictures and tracking statistics.

But we do have a plan for the upcoming football season that involves something similar.

The live blog that the Times-Journal has done on City Council meetings, elections and Friday’s emergency response drill will also be used at football games.

Not every game, because that’s impossible, but important games will be available online with play-by-play and commentary. We’re also planning a weekly series of Web-based videos.

The plans are still in the works, and suggestions are welcome.

More updates on these plans will be available as the football season gets closer.
