Summer programs at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library aren’t just for young children.

Library staff members have created weekly programming such as painting, jewelry making, woodworking and sign language, all designed for teenagers and adults.

“There’s something for everyone that’s fun and exciting,” said Crystal Drye, circulation director.

One of the new programs for this summer is woodworking with Michael Henderson.

“I’m intending to give a small lesson on different crafts of working with wood as far as creating pots and stuff to hang on your wall,” Henderson said. “But, the class is only two hours, so I’m not going to get into too much.”

The project will work with carpenter’s glue for safety reasons and so that the level of difficulty will be open for everyone.

“I want to show them different things that they can do, that if you use your imagination, you can create anything,” Henderson said.

Programs will be Tuesdays from June 1 through July 20 at 10 a.m. for adults and 2 p.m. for teenagers.

Adult sessions align with the children’s programming, so parents are invited to visit programs while children enjoy programs like the puppet shows.

Drye has also made sure that most programs cater to both sexes.

“This is not all girl stuff,” Drye said. “These are things that boys can do, too.”

Programs do not require registration, but spots are first come, first serve. Some classes may have a participant limit based on the number of supplies.

Each session will last one to two hours each, depending on the project. Although sessions are labeled for adults or teenagers, participants may attend either session.

“Just because 10 a.m. is for the adults does not mean that the young adults can’t come at the earlier time,” Drye said. “The same is true for the adults.”

The only change between programs may be the level of difficulty.

Mature older children will also be welcome to the teenager program.
