PLANTERSVILLE — Ed Miller thinks his Dallas County High School softball team is playing its best right now and he hopes that will carry over today when they start the regional tournament in Gulf Shores.

“Our only loss is to the team that’s ranked No. 1,” Miller said. “Our pitching has only been off one day. Otherwise, we’ve only needed two or three runs to win.”

Dallas County opens play against Andalusia at 9:30 a.m. today and will play a second game later in the day. The opponent and time depend on the result of the first game.

The Hornets have been working on their small ball approach because the caliber is pitching they will face will be better than during the season. But the team did well against its own pitcher earlier in the week.

“We had a scrimmage and we got four runs off Cassie (Daniels),” Miller said. “Her team won, but that was because of an error on the last play and it was a player who doesn’t normally play that position. It was 5-4, and I was surprised we got that many runs off her.”

The Hornets finished fourth in the region last year. The top two teams advance to the state tournament.
