Get ready for Skate Day.
Local skateboard enthusiasts will show off their expertise and teach others the fundamentals Saturday at the skate area at Bloch Park.
Skaters Tony Hatch and Bryan Hitchcock say they’ll arrive to set up for the day from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. Other skaters are expected to join them as the day progresses.
“If their parents are OK with it, with teach any kid who wants to learn,” said Hitchcock. “We want to show that we are not the stereotype.”
Hatch said the event occurs every year at the park, when skateboarders gather and make an all-day event of the sport.
This year they plan to put up a tent, play music and serve free food and drinks.
“We have a lot of water,” Hatch said.
The day will also feature a contest for children with recognition for the best skater.
“We’re doing this for the kids,” said Hitchcock. “This is what we love to do.”
In the event of rain, the skaters, including Garrett Coffee and Clay Smith, have constructed portable ramps to install under the pavilion at Bloch Park.
“We’ll go either rain or shine,” Hitchcock said.
