SELMA — Morgan Academy won its home finale 14-4 Tuesday night over Clarke Prep.
Crawford Traylor threw a two-hitter and struck out 10 in five innings.
Senators coach Robert Massey the team has struggled closing out games as of late.
“We don’t know how to take a situation and play through it expecting to win,” Massey said. “We don’t know how to win.”
Morgan will be in the AISA playoffs in either second or third place in the area, but Massey said the team could just as easily be in the running for the championship.
“Good baseball teams find a way to win,” Massey said. “When the ball bounces the wrong way, we duck our heads and wonder how we’re going to lose this one. The team is fighting against itself mentally.”
Morgan nearly gave back the mercy rule Tuesday.
After going up 7-0, an error and walk helped load the bases before a three-RBI triple by Clarke’s Jason Gates.
Then up 14-3 in the fifth, a walk, two wild pitches and a error let a run score and put a runner on third base who struck out but reached on a passed ball.
“We get to 10, and then we decide we’re not going to run because we have a 10-run lead,” Massey said. “When you get a lead like that, you ought to be able to hold it.”
