Bond money at work

Bond issue money is going to work in a way that will bring more people and dollars into Selma.

Crews trimmed grass along the track at Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon along the track’s edges in advance of preparing the surface for an upgrade.

Selma Recreation Department Director Elton Reece estimates with sunny, warm weather contractors could finish the track’s surface in April.

The AISA track meet is scheduled for Selma this year. Many private schools will attend the event, spending money in local restaurants and stores. Some may even stay in hotels overnight.

This is good for Selma’s economy, as much of the city’s general fund budget depends on sales tax dollar. Retailers here in down will also draw benefits from this.

In addition, the upgrade could help bring the public school AHSAA smaller division schools meet to Selma. The city once hosted those state events, but didn’t have the hotel space. Now, Selma has plenty of room.

This upgrade sounds like a win-win situation for the entire community.
