SELMA — The honors have already started coming in for the Selma High School softball team, and coach Jermel Bell hopes many more will follow.
Two players — Ayana Moore and Myralia Rose — were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Brewbaker Tournament last week and another — Ashley Allen — garnered honorable mention.
Bell is hoping those girls among others can help the Saints improve on last year’s .500 record.
“We need the girls to come together and build on the team concept,” Bell said. “The biggest thing is we’re missing experience, For the most part, I think they’re better than they think they are.”
Jonisha Jackson, Deanna Steele, Karlynn Savage and Iberianna Williams will also be called on to lead the Saints.
“We’ve lost three games, but two of them were real close,” Bell said. “We made some errors and that decided the game. But overall it’s going pretty good.”
Assistant coach Fred Scott said the team is strong at the plate, but he expects the play in the field will decide most games, as has been the case early.
“We have a lot of young players who are taking their time to build (camaraderie),” Scott said.” We will be very fundamentally and defensively sound.”
The Saints haven’t had much opportunity to practice and just got some players from basketball, but Bell isn’t worried yet.
“We’re hitting the ball well,” Bell said. “It’s coming together pretty good.”
