SELMA — Morgan Academy baseball coach Robert Massey is ready to get his team some experience.
Starting today, they will get it.
Morgan is hosting the Pepsi Classic today and Saturday at Morgan Field and Bloch Park and will play two games today.
“We’re really young,” Massey said. “I know every coach says that, but we really are. We have 10 sophomores.”
Massey is in his first year as the Senators’ coach, but he coached many of the players last year as the junior varsity coach.
“I know the sophomores, but I don’t know the juniors and seniors,” Massey said. “We want everybody to play so they can have a chance to earn a starting spot.”
Massey said the team will play 34 games this year, which is about 15 more than normal, to prepare for the playoffs, should the Senators make it that far.
Massey has scheduled games against two state runners-up and a state champion in addition to tough area competition.
Seven pitchers — six of them sophomores — will lead the Senators this season, and Massey said he thinks that will be the strength of the team once things get rolling.
“We don’t have an ace where you run him out and win,” Massey said. “But we have seven guys we are confident in who will throw strikes.”
