SELMA — Morgan Academy High School varsity middle and high school math teams qualified to move on to the AISA state math competition after winning the fifth district’s competition on Feb. 16 at Prattville Christian Academy. The teams advance to the state competition set for March 5 at Faulkner University.

Members of the middle school team are Tayler Fancher, Katherine Averitt, Conner Henderson, Charlie Ammons and Coleman Smith. High school team members are Parker Dewitt, Laura Talton, Rachael Sherrer, Walker Mason and James Dailey.

Individually, Austin Deavers of Meadowview Christian School qualified to compete in state in the individual scoring category for the varsity middle school division.

“They’ve always done really well,” said Shelby Fancher, one of the sponsors. Pud Glover and Robert Andress also serve as sponsors of the teams.

At district, students took a 50 question multiple-choice test. High school students also have a time ciphering round. “It’s where they have to answer questions in 30 seconds, 60 seconds or 90 seconds,” Fancher said. “By getting it correct in the 30 seconds, you get more points than in 60 seconds or no points for after 90 seconds.”

Sponsors grade the tests. To keep score sheets anonymous, students are assigned numbers and are given these numbers after the sponsors have left the room. Students are shuffled at tables of five people that contained no students from the same school at the same table.

The state competition will test the knowledge of students from seven districts in the state. The four highest individual scores comprise the team score grade on a scale from 0 to 50, a total of 0 to 200 per team.
