Play-off time is right around the corner for all of the local area teams.

While some may not know their fate yet, Selma High School’s boys team know exactly who and where they are playing.

“We will be heading down to G.W. Carver High School (Montgomery, Ala.) for the tournament,” said Selma’s second year coach Woody Jackson.

The Saints (17-7) go into the Class 5A, Area 3 tournament with a two-seed where they will be taking on the Chilton County Tigers.

Selma has been using their practices before the tournament to get back to fundamental basketball said coach Jackson.

“We are going over all of the small things right now,” said Jackson. “The boys may not think they are necessary, but they are the things that win games.”

The Saints have already beaten Chilton twice in the regular season, but coach Jackson knows that his boys won’t be looking ahead.

“We didn’t blow them away the first two times we played them, in a one-and-done tournament you can’t anyone lightly.” Jackson said.

Chilton County head coach Donnie Hand knows that it will take a good effort from his team to take down the Saints.

“We have worked on being able to rebound during our practices,” said Hand. “We are at a big size disadvantage, so hopefully this work will allow us to do better on the boards.”

Having now faced each other twice already, the two teams should have a good feel for each other.

“We know they like to run, so we are going to try to slow the game down,” Hand said.

While neither coach is looking ahead toward a possible match-up with Carver, both know it will take a lot of work if they are to take down the Wolverine if the time comes.

“You can’t make mistakes against Carver,” Hand said. “If you do they will take it the other way for an easy dunk.”

Chilton and Selma will face-off Friday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. and host Carver will take on Demopolis High School immediately following.

The winners of Friday’s games will face off for the area championship Monday night at 7:30 pm.
