SELMA – The process works like this: Today Community Development Director Charlotte Griffeth goes to Montgomery and hand-delivers paperwork to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. Within days, the gaping hole on Broad Street should be filled.

The Selma City Council approved a plethora of paperwork Tuesday at its meeting to clear the way for a grant already given the nod by ADECA to repair the sink hole.

Council members seemed a little surprised at the amount of paperwork. Council member the Rev. Dr. Cecil Williamson groused that he had not enough time to review the work.

But the paperwork flowed through.

The hole has been there a number of weeks. It will cost about $50,000 to repair, according to Mayor George Evans.

The hole is believed caused by collapsed aging sewer lines beneath the city’s streets.

The sink hole has caused traffic hazards, although the site is well-marked.

Nobody with the city had a timeline for the work’s completion.
