SELMA — Woodie Jackson and Anthony Harris believe they have a way to forget about turkey leftovers and frantic shoppers this week.
The game is high school basketball, and the way to watch it is the inaugural Selma High School Thanksgiving Shootout from Thursday-Saturday.
Twenty-one games are scheduled over the three days, starting when the Thanksgiving meal has had time to settle — 4 p.m. Thursday.
Ten schools will compete for the top three places; first-, second- and third-place teams will receive trophies. All-tournament players for boys and girls also will receive will trophies.
The eight teams involved in the double-elimination boys’ tournament are Autaugaville, Southside, Keith, Central-Hayneville, Brookwood, Dallas County, Sumter County and host Selma.
In the girls’ tournament are Keith, Southside, Sumter County, Central-Tuscaloosa, Dallas County, Demopolis, Central-Hayneville and host Selma.
“Because it’s the first time we’ve held this tournament, it’s exciting,” said Jackson, the Selma boys’ coach.
Only the boys’ teams will play Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. The girls’ teams join in on Friday, starting at 8 a.m. with 12 girls’ games and four boys’ games.
