SELMA — A Selma man who turned himself in to police for assault last month was arrested Monday for drug-related charges.

Selma police arrested Demetrius Collins, 23, and charged him with unlawful possession of marijuana first-degree, a class-c felony.

Selma police Sgt. Doug Stewart said police were in the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Street approaching a large group and one person started to run.

That person turned out to be Collins. When police caught up with him, they frisked him and found a substance believed to be marijuana.

Earlier police charged Collins with assault in the first-degree.

Stewart said detectives had a warrant for the suspect in the Lawrence Street shooting. Collins reported to the police station about 12:30 p.m.

The shooting occurred in the 1500 block of Lawrence Street at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 3, but the victim had moved over to Martin Luther King Jr. Street before officers arrived. The victim was wounded in the thigh.

Officers placed Collins in the Dallas County Jail under a $15,000 bond for the marijuana charge. As of press time Collins was still in the jail.
