SELMA — Southside High volleyball April O’Neal and the Panthers did something different from most prep squads this year.

The Panthers, who are in their first year of the volleyball program, didn’t have a Senior Day at the team’s last home.

There was a “problem.” All of the players are underclassmen.

For O’Neal that won’t be a problem for next year’s team, after the 2009 squad ended its season Tuesday with a five-game loss to Livingston in the playoffs. The squad fell three points short of victory in their first time in the playoffs.

“We just didn’t finish,” said O’Neal. “ I was very excited about the way our team played this year and to go as far as we did. We didn’t have Senior Day, but we did have Volleyball Appreciation Day.”

Livingston prevailed in the match 12-25, 25-16, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13.

Africa Tyler had 11 aces for Southside in the match. Khadydia Fails had four kills and Lakesha Thomas added three important kills. Rita Pullom led the Panthers with four digs.
