SELMA — While some years may pass before people ride contiguous trails along the riverside from park to park, the planning continues in City Hall.

A handful of citizens and the Selma City Council Recreation Committee discussed more plans for a greenway to lead from Riverfront Park to the Riverview Park, site of the Battle of Selma re-enactment.

“We’re trying to solidify what we want to do with the park,” said Selma City Council member Dr. Monica Newton, who chairs the committee.

First that will mean a feasibility study for which there are grant funds available. The Selma City Department of Planning and Development is working on a grant to pay for the feasibility study.

At the same time, the Planning and Development Department is working on a grant that could see the hiking and biking trails planned and constructed.

Newton said the city committee needs to find a path for the trail to which people will have the fewest objections.

“All of this is really an idea,” she said. “Nothing is set in stone.”

The committee will continue to meet about every two weeks to discuss plans.
