Gorden announces candidacy

SELMA — Charryse King Gorden has announced her candidacy for the District 1 seat of the Selma City School Board in the Oct 27 election.

She said she is not running as a typical politician or to earn anything for herself, but to become a strong advocate for students, parents and teachers.

“It is so important for every elected officials to spend time in the schools and to stay informed with all the issues, so they can be addressed,” Gorden said.

She said she would like to see the school board work as a unit.

This is not currently the case, but I believe with this elected school board it will become the case,” she said.

Other issues include readjusting the classroom requirements for children who are learning disabled.

“Learning disability children does not need to sit in a regular classroom if they truly cannot comprehend on their grade level,” Gorden said.

She graduated in 1993 from Dallas County High School with an advanced diploma.

She graduated from Auburn University, Montgomery, in November 1997 with a bachelor’s in psychology.

In June 2002 she earned her master’s in professional counseling, graduating magna cum laude.

She is married to Tremayne Gorden and they have three daughters in the school system.
