14 vie for 2009 Jr. Miss title

The 33rd annual Dallas County Jr. Miss Scholarship Program will be held at Pickard Auditorium at 6 p.m. Saturday.

America’s Junior Miss was founded in 1958 and is headquartered in Mobile. More than 700,000 young women from across the nation have participated in Junior Miss programs at the local, state and national levels. In addition to cash scholarships, Junior Miss participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from about 200 colleges and universities.

Fourteen area students will vie for the Dallas County crown.

Katie Elizabeth Davis (‘Brown’)

Katie Elizabeth Davis is a student at Dallas County High School. She plans on attending Auburn University and wants to pursue a career as an electrical engineer. She is involved in the youth group and church choir at Elkdale Baptist Church, cheerleading, Selma-Dallas County Youth Leadership, BETA Club, secretary; National Honor Society, SGA, FBLA, assistant secretary, the DCHS Drama Club and was an ACE competition participant.

Ashlyn Goodwin

Ashlyn Goodwin is a student at Selma High School. She plans to attend Tuskegee University and wants to pursue a career as a dentist or orthodontist. She is a Selma High School cheerleader, a member of the Selma High School choir, alto section leader; and is active in the Tuskegee Agritrek/Science Trek Summer Institute, Tuskegee Youth Gardening Project, SuperScholar/Excel Program, Xavier University; Academic Challenge for Excellence — WCCS, and Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she is a junior usher, member of the praise dance team and active in youth fellowship.

Lauren Elizabeth McKinley Swindle

Lauren Elizabeth McKinley Swindle is a student at John Tyler Morgan Academy. She plans to attend either Auburn University or The University of Mobile. She is active in FCA, MACO, the Spanish Club, Science Club, Computer Team, Drama Club, school choir and Westwood Baptist Church. She also played on the varsity basketball team and served as a water girl for the varsity football team.

Brittany Cameron Pearson

Brittany Cameron Pearson is a student at John Tyler Morgan Academy. She plans to attend The University of Alabama and pursue a career in pediatric dentistry. She was active in both the junior varsity and varsity cheerleading squads, was co-head 12 and a Universal Cheer Association All-Star. She is also a YMCA lifeguard, Diamond Doll, a three-year instructor McConnell Twins Dance Studio and she is involved in MACO, Track Helper, FCA, the French Club and the First Baptist Church youth group.

Lindsay Nicole Kiefer

Lindsay Nicole Kiefer is a student at Dallas County High School. She plans to attend The University of Alabama at Birmingham and wants to become a surgeon. She is a member of Church Youth Group, a representative for Youth on Youth Committee, and is involved in cheerleading, the BETA Club, National Honor Society and FBLA.

Amber Nicole Qadan

Amber Nicole Qadan is a student at Dallas County High School. She plans to attend The University of Montevallo and pursue a career in mass communications/broadcasting. She is an active member of the Church of Christ, a 2009 Jr. Miss Little Sister, Honor Society president, BETA Club treasurer. She is also active in the Drama Club, Spanish Club, and the ACE Competition.

Shelby Lee Story

Shelby Lee Story is a student at Ashworth High School. She plans to attend The University of South Alabama, New York University or The Pratt Institute and pursue a career as a political analyst or fashion designer. She is active in Shiloh Baptist Church, Romar Baptist Church Youth, Future Business Leaders of America, the Orange Beach, Recreation Center, Shiloh Praise Band and the Cherri Fussell Voice Studio

Tamira Wesleanne Williams

Tamira Wesleanne Williams is a student at Selma Early College High School. She plans to attend North Carolina A&T and pursue a career in business. She is a majorette in the Selma High School Band and active in Senior Culturama, the Selma-Dallas YMCA Leaders’ Club, Selma-Dallas County Youth Leadership Program, church organizations, the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Selma Early College High School, Margie’s Dance Studio and the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

Katherine Anne Jackson

Katherine Anne Jackson attends John Tyler Morgan Academy. She is undecided on her college, but plans to pursue a career in international relations. She is a cheerleader and active in the Junior BETA Club, president tennis team; Senior BETA Club, National Honor Society, French Club, Scholars Bowl, Drama Club, Science Club, Library Club, a Diamond Doll, Track Helper, Miss Central Alabama Little Sister, First Presbyterian youth group and Miss Morgan 2009.

Margaret O’Shelley Ingram

Margaret O’Shelley Ingram is a student at Dallas County High School. She plans to attend Wallace Community College Selma and Auburn University and pursue a career as a veterinarian. She is active in the National Honor Society, BETA Club, band, drum major: 2008-2009 and 2009-2010; FBLA, Spanish Club, DECA, ACE, reading and writing.

Kelsey Ann Talbot

Kelsey Ann Talbot attends Dallas County High School. She plans to attend Brigham Young University and pursue a career as a pediatrician. She is active with the Dallas County High School dance team, captain; BETA Club, FCCLA and dance at McConnell Twins Dance Studio.

JoAnna Shelby Irwin

JoAnna Shelby Irwin is a student at Meadowview Christian School. She plans to attend Judson and pursue a career in medicine and marketing. Activities and honors include the Drama Club, ACE Competition, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, United States Achievement Academy, Senior BETA Club, chaplain; Youth Leadership, assistant; Spanish Club and Youth Ambassadors.

Laurie Elizabeth Manderson

Laurie Elizabeth Manderson is a student at John Tyler Morgan Academy. She plans to attend The University of Alabama and pursue a career in architecture/design. Her activities and honors include the Junior BETA Club Senior BETA Club, MACO, French Club, Drama Club, Computer Team, Science Club, Library Club, Diamond Dolls, McConnell Twins dance and instructor, SGA , junior varsity cheerleader, varsity cheerleader, Youth Leadership Selma-Dallas County, track and the First Baptist Church youth group.
