The Selma Pre-Majors All-Stars ended their visit to the South State tournament Sunday the right way, rallying to beat Eufaula 7-5.
“I was really proud of the way the kids fought back,” Selma head coach James Roberts said. “We left the tournament with a good taste in our mouths.”
Selma went 2-2 in the three-day event, leading off with a 14-4 six-inning victory over host Thomasville on Friday. Saturday, Selma dropped two games — 5-1 to Auburn and 7-5 to eventual tournament champion Grove Hill.
“My only regret is that with a few more plays we could have been right in the thick of things at the end.”
Selma exploded for four runs in the fourth inning of the Sunday wrapup for the victory.
Eufaula, the District 6 champion, had taken a 2-0 lead over District 4’s Selma after four innings. Selma responded in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits.
Singles by John Pomeroy, Kevin Simmons, Taylor Copeland, Joel Yarbrough and Daniel Blackmon put Selma ahead 4-2.
Eufaula bounced back with three runs in the fifth inning, going ahead 5-4. But Selma’s two-out rally with five Eufaula errors in the seventh inning accounted for the 7-5 victory.
With two outs, Selma’s Yarbrough and Juston Moreland each reached on errors to put runners on second and third bases. Conner Thorpe and Wil Tipton each singled to collect the three runs with the help of the errors.
Blackmon led the Selma hitters with two, followed by one each from Yarbrough, Thorpe, Tipton, Pomeroy, Simmons and Copeland.
