Susan Keith, councilwoman for Selma Ward 2, participated in the National League of Cities Emergency Management Training program to learn the roles and responsibilities of local officials during an emergency, disaster or terrorist attack.

At the seminar, Keith identified hazards unique to the community, analyzed the community’s emergency management structure and learned where to find available resources to support the community before, during and after an emergency or crisis.

“Not only did I lear about the availability of services following a natural disaster, but the functions of some agencies that provide help in anticipation of, during and following a natural disaster,” she said.

The NLC-Emergency Management Training Program provides in-depth emergency management training to local officials in the wake of recent disasters, such as Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina and the Minneapolis bridge collapse. Each seminar addresses the four missions of emergency management: prevention, protection, response and recovery.
