A rib cook-off, plenty of music and family fun headline the July 4 celebration here at the Walking Trail’s City Park.
The celebration will begin with a bicycle parade for children at 5 p.m., said Valley Grande City Council member Donna Downs. Any child from up to 7 years old can decorate a bicycle, wagon or stroller and participate.
After the parade, the games will open up. Games will include Bozo buckets, hole in one, football throw, go fishing, horse shoes, pickup ducks, car bashing, face painting and water balloon throw.
Downs promises plenty of food for sale, including hot dogs, chicken legs, barbecue sandwiches, nachos and cheese and funnel cakes.
George Henry from Dixie 100 will provide music.
But one of the highlights of the day is the competition for the best ribs in Dallas County.
The Valley Grande Exchange Club sponsors the cook-off. People who want to compete still have time to enter the contest. Call Mark Story at 431-0102 or be on site at 3 p.m. to register.
Story said eight people have signed up for the cook-off. The Exchange Club will provide the ribs. The cook-off will begin at 4 p.m. with judges’ decisions by 7 p.m.
The winner will take home $250 for first place; $75 for second place and $50 for third.
Sponsors for the cook-off are Alabama PowerSports, First Cahawba Bank, Ballard Home Care Services, Jimmy Johnson at Reliable Cadillac Pontiac GMC, Sign Me Up Grafix, Carquest, CarpetPlus, City Tune-Up & Brake Service, Chuckwagon Steakhouse, HealthMark Home Medical Equipment, Sears of Selma, Meadows Tire, KT’s Country Store and Gabe’s Corner.
