Lenae Hatfield is $1,000 better off today.

She unearthed The Selma Times-Journal’s treasure chest from its secret spot near a tree on King’s Bend Road early Sunday. They had search the area on Friday, but came up empty-handed.

“We were checking signs and posts, but didn’t think to check trees,” said Hatfield.

She and her family — husband, Timmy, and children, Blake and Britney — joined a line of cars at the Selma Times-Journal building at around 11:55 p.m. Saturday evening for the last clue of the contest.

When the paper hit the stands, there was a mad rush to get the treasure.

Timmy Hatfield held the flashlight while Lenae Hatfield and the children searched. Blake Hatfield unearthed the box around 1:45 a.m.

With an extra $1,000 in hand, the Hatfields already have plans for their new found fortune.
