Selma’s Blanton leads State Sr. Am

Published 9:35 pm Friday, June 26, 2009

Dr. Don Blanton of Selma shot a 6-under 65 Friday to take the first-round lead in the 12th Senior Amateur Championship at Selma Country Club.

Blanton was among four of the 140 golfers who registered under-par rounds Friday. He was the only player in the 57- to 64-year-old group with negative numbers, while the other three came from the 50-56 division.

The field will be cut to about 60 players and ties after today’s round, with the final 18 holes Sunday morning.

Blanton said he had a deadly combination to capture Friday’s first-round lead.

“I hit the ball good and I putted good,” said Blanton, who scored 32-33—65 starting from hole No. 10. “I hit a shot on the first hole (No. 10) that could have been out of bounds, but it stayed in. I parred the hole, and it just got better from there.”

Blanton sank a 10-foot putt on the 141-yard par-3 No. 15 for birdie, then he birdied the 433-yard par-5 No. 18 when his 5-iron approach shot dropped 4 inches from the cup.

He was in the same threesome as Sam Farlow of Birmingham, who shot a 2-over 73. Farlow has won the state amateur championship six of the seven years between 1998 and 2004.

Blanton said his play in last year’s state senior amateur helped him Friday.

“I won my age division in Birmingham last year, and I had never done that,” he said. “That takes the pressure off this year.”

Three players were three strokes back: Bob Cox of Guin, Mike Greer of Birmingham and Tom Davis of Hoover.

Friday’s complete results and today’s tee times are:
