O’Toole wins junior tourney

An incorrect scorecard then a par on the 55th hole Wednesday earned 16-year-old John Michael O’Toole of Pinson the winner’s trophy in the 48th annual Bud Burns Dixie Junior Invitational at Selma Country Club.

O’Toole and Troy Cook battled to 217 scores after 54 holes and had to play off for the overall title. O’Toole hit the green in two shots and two-putted for the par. Cook chipped onto the green on his third shot and also two-putted, but for bogey.

“There wasn’t anything special I did to win,” said O’Toole, who said he “didn’t play good last year.”

“My putting was pretty consistent, though,” he said. “I was making most of my putts within 10 feet. And if you miss a lot of those putts, you can get yourself in trouble.”

Michael Johnson of Birmingham had signed a 74 on his card after making a 3-putt bogey on the par-4 No. 18. However, his card should have showed a 75, so he was disqualified.

With the correct 75 on his card, he would have finished with a 212 for a five-shot victory.

“He three-putted the last hole and he just wasn’t paying attention when he signed his card,” Selma Country Club golf pro Tommy Burns said. “The difference is if you sign your card for a lower score, you’re disqualified. If you sign your card with a higher score, you just take the score.”

O’Toole won the 15- to 16-year-old A Division, while Cook captured the 17- to 18-year-old A Division. Those were the only groups to play 54 holes — 36 holes on Wednesday.

Another award winner was Jessica Stewart, a 17-year-old Morgan Academy student. She became the first girl in tournament history to receive the Paul Grist Trophy. It is presented to the Selma golfer who exemplifies the highest standards of sportsmanship, stewardship and love for the game.
