BATON ROUGE, La. — The Montgomery Dream held off a second-half outburst by the Baton Rouge Heat to take a 95-86 victory Saturday night in Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League action.
“We ran a lot the first half,” said Montgomery coach Melissa White, who is also the Selma High girls assistant coach. “The second half, they put the press on us to slow us down.”
Montgomery (3-0) led 53-45 after halftime, but had only a two-point — 70-68 — margin after three quarters.
“They tightened up on defense, and we missed easy scores,” White said. “It seemed like we would miss an easy 2-pointer, then they would hurry back and hit a 3-pointer.”
Former Carver standout Yleshia Barnes led all scorers with 33 points. Santana Seay, who starred at Selma High and Concordia College, added 25 points. Both players had 10 rebounds each.
For Baton Rouge, Ashley Blake had 29 points, followed by Rolonda Monroe (19) and Courtney Simmons (11).
Montgomery hosts Mobile’s Gulf Coast Tropics on Saturday for its next action.
