For more than 150 years, the Selma-Dallas County YMCA has served the needs of people in this community, and that tradition continues on Friday as the YMCA kicks off the 2009 Strong Kids Campaign.
The community-wide fund-raising campaign will start with a Prayer Breakfast at the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County (1 YMCA Drive) and opening of the 1925 Time Capsule from the Paul M. Grist YMCA building on Broad Street.
Doors open at 6:30 a.m. and the program begins at 7 a.m. Guest speaker for the breakfast will be Dr. Jerry Henry, a minister, teacher, author and Christian leader who served the Selma-Dallas County area for more than 15 years. Currently Jerry is the pastor of Fairhope First Baptist Church.
Tickets are $15 and are available from any board member or from either branch of the YMCA. All contributions made to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign are tax deductible. The goal of the “Strong Kids Campaign” is to raise $60,000 to support the YMCA’s programs for the less advantaged youth, adults and senior residents of our community, said campaign co-chairs BeckyYoungblood and Cathy Henry. In 2008, the YMCA assisted more than 300 local residents, representing in excess of $118,000.
“The YMCA’s ability to remain strong and meet its growing responsibilities depend on the support and generosity of local residents who believe in its mission,” said Jerry Wang, CEO. “The YMCA is a human care organization based on Christian values that promotes the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals. When you contribute to the YMCA, you never have to worry about a return on your investment. The outcome is always favorable.”
