Jamontay Pilson and Alex Phifer, two of Greenville’s own, took part in national signing day on Wednesday.
Pilson, a highly recruited defensive lineman and Auburn commitment, signed with Northwest Mississippi Community College, while Phifer is headed to the University of South Alabama as a defensive back.
Pilson said he’s been looking forward to this for a while.
“I’m so excited to be here doing this,” he said. “It’s a one-chance opportunity to sign. It’s just a great day.”
Phifer said he wasn’t too excited about signing day at first, but all that started changing.
“I really wasn’t excited beforehand, but the closer it got, the more excited I got,” he said. “I couldn’t sleep last night. The next step is playing football.”
Phifer will get a chance to help get the Jaguars’ program rolling as USA starts a football program.
Greenville head coach Ben Blackmon was glad to see two more of his players sign scholarships.
“Last year we had Akeva Owens sign, now we’ve got Jamontay and Alex,” he said. “Hopefully we can add more in the future. I hope these younger kids will learn that if they put in hard work and effort, you can go a long way.”
