Alabama, Auburn get top prospects

Alabama has closed pretty strong on signing day, picking up commitments from a top-flight defensive back and linebacker (Dre Kirkpatrick and Tana Patrick), in addition to a solid offensive line prospect (Brandon Moore) and running back (Eddie Lacy).

In fact, the Tide closed so well that Alabama jumped to No. 2 in the Scout.com team rankings, and reclaimed the top spot in the current Rivals.com team rankings.

That’s what happens when you finish with four 5-star and 14 4-star commitments.

But the Tide has experienced disappointment today as well.

It seems Moore was the Tide’s backup plan to Hargrave offensive tackle Bobby Massie, who signed with Ole Miss this morning. He was on the board a short while after Massie made his decision.

Accepting commits from receivers Kenny Bell and Kendall Kelly — both are solid prospects on the next level — does not bode well for Alabama’s chances to ink Reuben Randle.

Auburn has also had a solid day. The Tigers held on to soft commits Terrance Coleman, Harris Gaston and Jonathan Evans. They also pulled a coup by signing wide receiver DeAngelo Benton, a two-time LSU signee, and Tampa, Fla. running back Dontae Aycock.

It appears Auburn will finish in the top 20 on both scouting networks. Rivals has the Tigers at No. 15 and Scout has them at No. 18.
