Riley says he’ll push to improve ethics law

Gov. Bob Riley says he will ask the Alabama Legislature to approve a stronger state ethics law.

Riley told high school students Monday that he will propose a comprehensive rewrite of the ethics law in his State of the State speech to the Legislature on Tuesday night. Riley says his proposal will include giving subpoena power to the State Ethics Commission.

Riley has proposed limited changes in the ethics law in the past. But he said the convictions resulting from Alabama’s two-year college investigation make the time right to try a more comprehensive bill. Riley says he will give more details of his proposal in his speech Tuesday night.
