Nine box cars on a Meridian & Bigbee train derailed early this morning in Orrville about a block off Alabama Highway 22 in a field. No injuries were reported.
Two representatives of the railroad were at the site by midmorning, but declined comment. Dallas County authorities were notified of the derailment by residents in the area, according to Dallas County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy Pugh. DHS/EMA deputy director Rhonda Abbott is headed to the scene.
Pugh said the derailment is not a danger to the community. The box cars did not contain hazardous material.
M&B workers unhooked the cars from the train that did not derail and took them from the scene. Authorities said workers are on the way to clean up the derailed cars. The cleanup should begin about 12:30 p.m.
