Update from USA Today reporter on luncheon and collapse of Sen. Kennedy

The latest comes from the luncheon to celebrate the incoming president and vice president… This is an update posted by USA TODAY

Senators Edward Kennedy and Robert Byrd fell ill a short time ago at the Capitol luncheon where President Obama and Vice President Biden are being honored, CNN and other news media are reporting.

The luncheon is continuing. Earlier, we passed along some notes from USA TODAY’s Kathy Kiely about what it was like at the start.

Update at 2:59 p.m. ET: The minister giving the benediction at the lunch, Rev. Daniel Coughlin, just said that Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., “responded well” to treatment and is being taken to a hospital.

Update at 2:58 p.m. ET: The Associated Press says Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., was taken from the Capitol on a stretcher.

Update at 2:52 p.m. ET: Kathy says she’s been told that both Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W. Va., fell ill and that medical staff responded and took them away for treatment. And Obama, who is now speaking, just said his prayers are with “Vicki” and the ill senator’s family. Kennedy’s wife named Victoria.
