ORRVILLE — Saint Jude toppled Keith 55-42 in a seesaw affair determined by runs.
“I thought we played really sloppy to be honest,” said Saint Jude coach Karimah Collins. “I think we could’ve executed a little better, but you have those games. But going into February, I want us to be playing a lot better.”
A Taylor Sippial layup broke a 6-6 tie and sparked an 11-0 run to put the Pirates ahead 17-6, and after the first period, Saint Jude led 19-9.
But Keith opened the second quarter with a 12-1 run to tie the game at 20 with 4:50 remaining in the half. Alexus Young keyed the run with a 3-point play, 3-pointer and layup.
But the tie was as close as the Bears would get the rest of the way.
Saint Jude responded with an 8-1 run triggered by two Shundrika Jones 3-pointers to reclaim the lead — and momentum — at 28-21.
“We played good,” said Keith coach Cecil Williams. “We kind of gave out in the end. It was a good effort. We played good through the first three quarters.”
A Shundray Davis 3-point play capped an 8-0 third quarter run that extended the Pirates’ lead to 45-33, and Saint Jude led by a double-digit margin the rest of the way.
Davis led the Pirates with 22 points and Teralesha Baity chipped in 11.
Young led the Bears with 19 points.
