The holidays may be over, but department stores aren’t letting shoppers go without a fight.
And it seems to be working.
Belk leads the pack with several post-Christmas sales and specials. According to the company website, clearance items are 85 percent off, stemware is 50 percent off and Saturday brought a one-day sale with all items an “extra” 15 percent off.
Selma’s Belk store had a weeklong after-Christmas sale, and followed that with a New Year’s sale that is still in progress. The shoppers have responded.
“We had a real good after-Christmas crowd and all the sales went well,” said human resource manager Princess Turner. “Fine jewelry had a 30 percent coupon for after-Christmas. They had a crowd over there. Cosmetics was booming too. They sold out of a lot of fragrances over there.”
Wal-Mart’s hottest seller in the new year is clearance Christmas decorations. However, the store did not see an across the board boom after Dec. 25.
“After-Christmas was pretty slow, but since the first of the month it’s been pretty good,” said Wal-Mart’s manager on duty, who refused to be identified. “Yesterday’s sales were pretty good. It’s pretty steady today also.”
J.C. Penney’s store manager left for the day. Repeated phone calls were disconnected.
