Shooting suspect certified as adult
A Selma teenager is in Dallas County Jail under $30,000 bond, facing murder charges.
Xavier Garrett was certified as an adult and charged with murder in the shooting death Friday of Rahemeen Garner, 16. The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of Lauderdale Street.
Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey said Garner suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. The youth was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities believe the two teenagers confronted one another at a dance at the Brown YMCA on Lauderdale. The altercation continued into the neighborhood, said Selma Police Chief William T. Riley III.
Authorities said Garner ran about a block after he was shot and collapsed behind a house.
Officers found four spent .380-caliber cartridges, a loaded magazine of .380-caliber bullets and two live rounds of .380-caliber bullets at the scene.
The victim’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.
