Dallas County jumped on Maplesville early, and dominated the Red Devils to the final buzzer for a 59-16 win.

“We couldn’t handle their press,” said Maplesville coach Eric Bailey. “They jumped out on us quick.”

The Hornets (8-2) scored the first 21 points of the contest before a Kortisha Morrow layup put Maplesville on the board with only 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Bianca Heard answered with a 3-pointer to give Dallas County a 24-2 lead after the first period.

“We got off to a quick start, and that’s what we wanted to do,” said Dallas County coach Charles Thompson. “The win was good for us. I’m very proud of the way they came out.”

The Hornets’ transition game and deadly shooting cooled off in the second quarter, but Maplesville (0-2) — still searching for its shooting touch — couldn’t take advantage. The Hornets won the decidedly defensive quarter 3-2, and led 27-4 at the half.

Leading 33-12 with more than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Dallas County iced the game with a 14-2 run sparked by a Jasmine Jones 3-pointer to extend the lead to 47-14. The Hornets closed strong by outscoring the Red Devils 12-2 in the final frame.

Britney Richardson and Kim Ross led the Hornets with 11 points each. Kortisha Morrow led Maplesville with eight points.
