Republican John McCain carried Tennessee and its 11 electoral votes in the presidential race against Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday, while U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander cruised to re-election.
The call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
State election coordinator Brook Thompson said no major voting problems had been reported by late Tuesday afternoon. Thompson had estimated before Tuesday that about 2.9 million votes would be cast in Tennessee, easily exceeding the record 2.45 million votes in 2004.
Memphis led the state in new voter registrations and city police Detective Monique Martin said that similar to New Year’s Eve, 100 extra officers were placed on duty near polling places as they closed. She said they were remaining on duty Tuesday night.
“We are expecting a multitude of people out,” Martin said.
