Become an educated voter

Aug. 26 will be on us before we know it. We’ve seen the candidates at some forums. We’ll have the opportunity for at least one more involving municipal candidates in Selma and those in Valley Grande.

On Thursday, the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce’s forum will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Striplin Performing Arts Centre, 1000 Selma Avenue.

The chamber doesn’t delve in politics, but it has tried to provide its members and the public with facts and information. This is one of those times.

If you live in Selma and plan to vote, this is a good opportunity to hear the candidates talk about themselves and field prepared questions.

Similarly, the Valley Grande Exchange Club will host its political forum Aug. 19 in the Martin Middle School Gymnasium on County Road 81 in Valley Grande.

Benny Austin, president-elect of the club, said all registered candidates seeking the offices of mayor and city council have received invitations.

We encourage people in Valley Grande to take advantage of this time, which will start with an introductory speech and followed by a question-and-answer session.

Informed voters make democracy work.
