Earlene Vinson Hawley

Earlene Vinson Hawley, 77, of Montgomery, AL passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

Family and friends will be received at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL on Friday, May 30th at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 31st at 3:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery Annex, Upper Wetumpka Rd., Montgomery, AL with Chad Harrison officiating.

A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she was preceded in death by her parents, William Earl and Rosebud Vinson, and her husband, Richard H. Hawley. She is survived by her daughter Pamela Parmer Harvill, Montgomery, Alabama, son Henry Carlson Parmer, Jr., Los Angeles, California, grandchildren, Troy Harvill (Patrice), Montgomery, AL, Barry Harvill (Heather), Birmingham, AL, three great-grandchildren, Greyson Harvill, Peyton Harvill and Maggie Rose Harvill, a sister Virginia Vinson Fuller (Lynne) and her family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to East Lake Community Church, 9109 Berrington Place, Montgomery, AL 36117 or Hospice of Montgomery. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery.

James Leonard McCary

James Leonard McCary, age 79, a resident of Selma, AL, passed away May 28, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Fulner McCary and his parents, Leonard LeeRoy and Minnie Myrtle McCary.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Chester McCary; daughter, Lyn (Skip) Bussells of Tuscaloosa, AL; granddaughter, Reagan Bussells (Edward) Jhee of Arlington, VA; sister, Irene M. McCormick and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Valley Grande Baptist Church with Rev. George K. Jones, Sr. and Rev. Mike Jackson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in New Live Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Skip Bussells, Edward Jhee, Lewis Persons, Sr., Jack Frost, Bob Meyers and Billy Aycock. Honorary pallbearers are the members of James Bearden&8217;s Sunday School Class, deacons of Valley Grande Baptist Church and the Korean War Veteran&8217;s Group from Dallas County.

Mr. McCary served with distinction in WWII and the Korean War. He received the Combat INF Badge, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and the United Nation Service Medal.

He was an avid reader and a student of history, a love he shared with his granddaughter.

Mr. McCary was a member of Valley Grande Baptist Church where he served as deacon and worked with the youth at Central Baptist Church for twenty-five years. Mr. Jeff Shannon

Mr. Jeff Shannon, 47, of Sardis, AL died May 21, 2008 at Baptist South Hospital. Services are scheduled for Sat. May 31, 2008 at 12:00 at New Bride officiated by Pastor Curtis Jackson. Burial will follow in New Bride Cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Service.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Shannon, Jr. Survivors include his mother, Ethel Shannon; one son, Jeffery Shannon; three daughters, Nicole Shannon Vaughan, Sara Hopkins, Jeffreda Love Shannon; four brothers, Roosevelt Shannon, Larry Shannon, William Shannon, and Anthony Shannon; two sisters, Essie Mae Wyrick of Lawton, OK and Bessie Jasper of Lawton, OK; two grandchildren, one son-in-law, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Other relatives include aunts and uncles.

Pallbearers will be military pallbearers.

Mr. William Smiley

Mr. William Smiley, 55, of Montgomery, AL died May 24, 2008 at Baptist South. Services are scheduled for Sat. May 31, 2008 at 12:00 at Miller Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Cossie Wilson.

Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Service.

Mrs. Fannie McGrew

Mrs. Fannie McGrew, age 89 of Gallion, Alabama passed May 24, 2008 at her residence.

Allen Marshall Veach

Allen Marshall Veach of Crossville, TN, son of Alvis and Ruth Veach of Selma, AL died suddenly on Friday, May 23rd. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 35 years, Lynn Marie Hawkins Veach also of Crossville, his children Allen Veach, Olivia Broody an Sarah Shadburne, (Alvis Veach, deceased), three grandchildren and his sister Bunny Veach Meyercord and her family. Allen was a research physicist, retired from Oak Ridge National Lab where he holds 12 patents regarding plasma physics, ion sources, isotope separation and high vacuum technology. He was awarded the ORNL &8220;Golden Acorn Award&8221; given only to people holding more than 10 patents since the beginning of the Manhattan Project in 1943. He was one of only 16 people to achieve this award. He was also named in Who&8217;s Who in Science and Engineering, Who&8217;s Who in America, Who&8217;s Who in Technology Today and American Men and Women of Science. Allen prided himself on being an inventor, collector and trader of rare coins and gemstones and general hobbyist. He had an insatiable thirst for learning and enjoyed being a student of the Bible and the world&8217;s great religions, the stock market, natural healing, and most recently portrait painting. He had a big heart for children and dogs and was always ready with a new card trick to play.

Graveside services will be held Monday, June 2, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, AL. Jerry Young from Crossville, TN will officiate.
