Wanda McCall has made history.

Tuesday night, the Selma City School Board unanimously voted McCall as the new, and first female, principal of Selma High School.

The new principal said she is up to the challenges her new job presents. The school has fallen below the state average of 20.2 in ACT scores and has failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress last year because of its dropout rate. Adequate Yearly Progress is a statewide accountability system mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act.

McCall said she wants to increase the graduation rate at the school, increase ACT participation and seeks the support of the school board and community.

McCall leaves Clark Elementary as principal after six years.

She started her career as a special education teacher at Sophia P. Kingston Elementary before serving three years as assistant principal at CHAT Middle Academy.

She has also served one year as assistant principal at School of Discovery, two years as assistant principal at Selma High School and one year as ninth-grade academy principal at Selma High School.

She has a bachelor&8217;s degree in education from Alabama A&M University and a master&8217;s degree in education from Troy University.

Dr. Bruce Dozier, who has served as principal of Selma High School for the past school year, will be transferred back to Selma Middle CHAT Academy as assistant principal.

He served as the assistant principal of CHAT for 10 years before moving to Selma High School.
