Pay raises have caused a stir among city school workers &8212; in a bad way.

Dr. Verdell Lett Dawson will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with the bus drivers, custodians, Child Nutrition Program managers and Child Nutrition Program workers in the library of Selma High School to discuss the new pay schedule recently passed by the Selma City School Board.

The salary schedule has prompted a sick out by bus drivers and a petition by nutrition workers.

Under the schedule, pay raises range from 63 cents to $5.

The petition submitted to city school board says:

Craig Pouncey, assistant state superintendent said schools must submit pay schedules to the state with budget documents by Sept. 15. However, the school board has the power to set the schedule as it sees fit.

Patricia Hildreth, the nutrition manager at Payne Elementary, agrees that the pay schedule is unfair. A manager has more duties than a cafeteria worker, she said.
