MONTGOMERY &8212; The Alabama Legislature has approved a bill that would allow retiring U.S. Representative Bud Cramer to qualify for state pension benefits exceeding $111,000 annually when he reaches age 70.
The 60-year-old Huntsville Democrat is a former district attorney who just missed qualifying for state retirement compensation when he left for Congress in 1990. The bill also would allow him to qualify as a supernumerary district attorney by counting time as an assistant prosecutor.
Governor Bob Riley says he’s studying the bill and hasn’t decided if he will sign it, veto it or recommend changes.
