MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ The NCAA has accused Alabama State University of 24 rules violations in four sports and charged the school with lack of institutional control.
The university received a notice of allegations last week after an NCAA investigation of nearly five years. The allegations were reported in Wednesday’s Montgomery Advertiser.
Nearly 500 of the 668 alleged instances of rules violations involved ineligible football players being allowed to work out in the offseason. Forty of them stemmed from football players whose grades were changed without the knowledge of the instructors.
The alleged violations were committed between 1999 and 2003. ASU attorney Kenny Thomas said the school will meet the NCAA’s June 27 deadline to respond but won’t issue any other comments.
