The issue: The city has proclaimed April 1 as Robert Jack Chandler Day.
Our position: Chandler is well deserving of this posthumous honor.
The new water treatment plant will have a good name &8212; Robert Jackson Chandler.
It’ll be dedicated April 1, the day that Chandler started his storied 50-year career with Selma Water Works. Members of the Alabama Water Works Association called him “Mr. Water.”
He died last August, but not before he earned the Best Operated Water Plan for five consecutive years. He also received the Charles M. White award and the Arthur M. Beck award for service in the water and wastewater industry. Even after his official retirement in 1993, he returned as a consultant and worked at the works until his death.
Not only was Chandler
Mr. Water, he also served on the city council from 1958-1960. He was president and treasurer of the Alabama Water Pollution Control Association.
Lee Goodwin, a director of the water board, brought the resolution before the Selma City Council on Monday.
“We respond positively to this request,” said Council member Jean Martin.
We agree. This is a fitting memorial to Chandler.
