DCHS got one run across in the first inning, but heated up considerably the second time around in the order.

A pair of leadoff singles by McKenzie Crawford and Avery Mott and an error in right field loaded the bases to start the top of the second. Kim Ross had a two-run single, and Albertina Miller and Cassie Daniels had RBI singles to help DCHS post a 5-0 lead. Keneasha Jefferson scored on a wild pitch, then Whitney Denson knocked an RBI double to make the lead 7-0.

Three of the Hornets’ runs in the second came with two outs. They scored a total of six runs with two outs in the ball game, including three on an error in center field with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Ally Honeycutt got hit with a pitch to lead off the Red Devils’ half of the third and later scored from third on a passed ball for the team’s first run of the game. Angel Smitherman’s RBI triple in the fourth accounted for the Devils’ only other run. They trailed 9-2 after the inning ended.

The Hornets added another run in the third, one in the fourth on a Daniels double and five in the fifth.

Maplesville had to score at least three times in the fifth to keep hope of extending the game alive. Heather Chambers and Julie Ousley both got hit with pitches to lead things off, but the rally petered out.

Daniels got the win on the mound for the Hornets.

Cheyenne Sheffield pitched all five innings in the loss for Maplesville.
