The Central Christian baseball team is still looking for its first win, and Thursday night might have been the closest it has come in the early season.
Shelby Academy broke through against Central Christian in the eighth inning.
It was then that the Raiders (6-0) put four runs up on the board to break a tie ball game and take an 8-4 win.
The Warriors (0-3) played steady defense and got solid pitching from Tobby Waites all night, but they hurt themselves by not scoring in the final four innings.
“We were doing good there up until the eighth inning,” CCA coach Richard Ghant said. “Then we just had bad luck. But we’re getting there.”
Shelby finally got to Waites in the final inning and knocked him out after scoring two runs. They got two more off reliever Bryant Rawls.
An error in center field brought the first run home. Then Cody Jones, Jake Fulgham and Jeremy Ogles had consecutive RBI hits.
The CCA hitters in the bottom of the eight went down in order.
“They took us right down to the end,” Raiders coach Mark Windham said. “They’re a good team, and they showed that tonight. We finally came through and scored some runs in the eighth.”
