BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Now that the first game is out of the way, the Concordia women can concentrate on Southern Virginia.
Santana Seay scored a game-high 27 points and shot 13-of-16 from the free-throw line to lead the Hornets to a 62-52 win over Bennett College in the USCAA national tournament Thursday night.
Concordia advances to the second round where it will play the team it beat in last year’s national title game.
ShaRonda LaBoard led Bennett with 20 points and 11 rebounds but also committed 11 turnovers. Kenyetta Johnson scored 13 points.
The Hornets went ice cold shooting from the floor in the second half, and they needed free throws to bail them out. They were 9-of-30 attempting field goals, but shot 10-of-12 from the line.
Sharpshooter Derin Aras went 3-of-5 from 3-point range and scored 11 points. Deshawn Butler added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Concordia had three players to pull down 10 or more rebounds, including Seay with 12 and Kearia Williams with 10.
