Staff report

Members of the Selma City Council reviewed a list of poll workers for each of their wards early Monday morning.

The meeting didn’t last long, said Jean Martin of Ward 3. “We got the list, looked over it and adjourned,” she said.

Questions about the poll workers list were raised at a city council meeting last week after Councilman Cecil Williamson of Ward 1 noticed some people who didn’t live in his ward were placed on the list as a worker for the Feb. 26 bond issue.

Council President George Evans said he had noticed the difference when he received his list last week, and had called the Alabama Municipal League. Selma is a Class 5 municipality and classes 1-5 must select poll workers from the wards in which they live.

“I talked to the lawyer at the league,” Evans said. “That’s what he said. This is based on my research.”

City Clerk Lois Williams said she used the same names that had been used for poll workers previously.

“I had no idea the council would oppose it. These are the names that are always used,” she said.
