A third quarter outburst Thursday night propelled Southside to a 67-45 sub-regional win over visiting Bullock County.
A 27-point offensive effort to open the second half was all that was needed to put away the Hornets.
“We had to light a fire under the girls during halftime,” Southside coach Jasmine Pritchett said. “They were able to come out an execute everything we asked them to do.”
With six minutes left in the third quarter and the game tied at 27, Southside went on an offensive and defensive tear and outscored Bullock County 23-6. Five different players scored for the Lady Panthers in the quarter – mostly inside – but with the help of a 3-pointer from Kiera Miles, two 3s by Jenae Thomas, and a triple that was banked off the glass at the buzzer by Shaniqua Williams.
“We got in our own way tonight,” said Bullock County coach Morgan Gibbons. “We just completely fell apart. We’re a much better team than we showed tonight, but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes.”
Williams, who in her last three games has averaged 21 points, led all scorers with 22. Kelsey Brown netted 12, and Regina Bartholomew added 11 points.
The win sends Southside to the Central Regional tournament, where it will play its first game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Alabama State.
