It almost seemed Concordia would never get over the hump Tuesday night.
The Hornets got within one point of tying Rust three times in the first half, only to see the lead slip away again.
Ronald Cooper finally gave the Hornets (7-12) the boost they needed, and they went on to a 74-62 win.
Cooper’s breakaway bucket gave the Hornets a 25-24 lead with 5:18 to play in the first half. They led 32-31 at the half and never trailed again.
Roddrice Griffin led Concordia with 15 points, Deonte Williams scored 14 and Greg Catlin scored 10.
Rust (7-11) fought back in the second half and threatened several times to make a run.
Eric Jackson hit a 3-pointer that made it a 65-56 game with 2:32 left. It was the first time in almost 10 minutes the lead had been less than double digits.
Two minutes later, James Roberson hit a layup that cut Concordia’s lead to 67-58.
Catlin helped Concordia pull away and put a pair of exclamation marks on the game with slam dunks in the final minute.
Randall McAdory led Rust with 13 points.
